Real Audio is audio compression and streaming technology that is frequently used on the Internet. The technology is not in the public domain. You can download the plugin player and encoder from www.real.com.

Advantages:

  • Almost immediate and real time audio.
  • Long audio files are viable.
  • Streaming audio (it will play as it downloads).
Disadvantages:
  • Many casual surfers cannot play real audio (unlike wav files, the plugin is not distributed with browsers until recently). It is because of this that we do not use real audio alone for our voice over index - we want are voice samples to be playable by all users.
  • Poor quality audio. High compression results in loss of quality.
  • A special server is required for streaming audio.
